The Vigilante made his debut in a back-up feature in Action Comics #42. The new character's "secret origin" was mentioned, almost in passing, as part of his first adventure. It took only three panels! Here they are...

Believe it or not, that was it! Not much of an origin -- but the story was expanded upon many years later, in aeries of back-up stories which ran in World's Finest #246-248. In these stories, Vig's sidekick, Stuff, is killed (in extremely brutal fashion) by his arch-nemesis, the Dummy, causing Vig to recall his origin. The lead tale, first of a trilogy, was called "Son of a Gun." Selected panels from these stories (art by Gray Morrow) are presented below...
