RF Chapter THREE of TEN
Beaver's Monster Shirt

"Leave It To Beaver" was a popular 1950s sitcom that chronicled the coming-of-age adventures of Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver. In an episode that aired June 2, 1962, titled "Sweatshirt Monsters" (season 5, episode 35), Beaver and his pals buy outrageous "monster shirts," then make a pact to wear them to school on the same day, defying the dress code. Horrors! Here's what happened…

X
Beaver and his friends see some cool new
MONSTER sweat shirts for sale in a local store!
X
They all want one, so they go into the store...
X
They all agree to wear the shirts to school the next day. A pact!
X
Beaver goes home, his parents are horrified by the sight of his new monster shirt!

MOM: "Beaver, what in the WORLD is that thing you're wearing?!"

BEAVER: "Oh you noticed? It was only $3.75 -- and the face is guaranteed not to run when you wash it!"

MOM: (Sarcastically) "Oh, that's good to know."
X
MOM: "You cartainly aren't wearing that to school!"

BEAVER: "But Mom, all the other guys are gonna wear theirs...."

DAD:" I don't care what the other guys are wearing, YOU'RE going to school wearing something civilized!"

BEAVER: "But golly Dad!"

DAD: "I don't care! Right after breakfast, you're going upstairs and putting on a shirt."

BEAVER: "Yes sir."
X
BIG BROTHER WALLY OFFERS THE BEAV SOME COMFORT...
X
BEAV DECIDES TO WEAR THE SHIRT ANYWAY. HE CHANGES IN THE GARAGE.
X
BUT WHEN HE GETS TO SCHOOL...
X
NONE OF THE OTHER BOYS ARE WEARING THEIR SHIRTS!
X
BEAVER IS SENT TO THE PRINCIPAL!
X
HIS PARENTS ARE CALLED IN TO THE SCHOOL! WARD IS ANGRY!
X
DAD: (Furious) "Beaver! Mrs. Rayburn, I assure you, we had no intention of letting Beaver coming to shool looking like THIS!"

PERINCIPAL RAYBURN "This manner of dress detracts from the reason we're here -- to get an education! What would it be like if everyone in the school wore something like that?"
X
DAD: "Mrs. Rayburn, I'm very sorry this happened, and I assure you, it won't happen again!"

Later, back home, when Mrs. Cleavertalks with her husband, she delivers what has come to be revered as THE classic "Leave It To Beaver" line of all time...
X
MRS. CLEAVER: "Dear, I hope you won't be too hard on the Beaver!"
X
As punishment for his henious and foul crime, the Beav is confined to quarters for the entire weekend! He asks if it's OK that he wear his prized sweatshirt during his confinement.

"I guess so," Dad replies.
