Legends of the Super-Heroes 1 of 3

"Legends of the Super Heroes" was a two-part television special that aired on NBC on January 18, 1979 and January 25, 1979. The much-hated special was based on DC's animated superhero series SUPER-FRIENDS, depicted BELOW by Alex Ross, after Alex TOTH, who did the original model sheets for the characters. Starting today, we're going to take a three-issue look at this often-reviled TV special!

X
One season of the original SUPER-FRIENDS cartoon was a sort of show-within-a-show mini-series called CHALLENGE OF THE SUPER FRIENDS, with episodes airing September 9 through December 23, 1978. The characters and conflicts in this series formed the basis for the LEGENDS television specials. Not surprising, when you consider that both shows were produced by ace animators Hanna-Barbera.

BELOW: A superhero casting call producers Hanna-Barbera ran in Variety, the show business newspaper. If you're wondering why it looks so good, it's because it's drawn by ALEX TOTH!
