CHAPTER SIX - PART THIRTEEN

Is Steve Ditko retired? NO! He's still working! At 86 years old, I bet he's putting out better work than YOU are! This chapter, we'll let Ditko's glorious images speak for themselves -- with a sampling of his work from 1973 to date.

XDAUGHTERS OF TIME, a Ray Zone 3-D comic, created by longtime Ditko collaborator Jack C. Harris (pictured right in a photo from Amazing World of DC Comics #4, January 1975), was penciled by Ditko, and, in a once-and-only collaboration, inked by Kurt Schaffenberger.

Schaffenberger designed the characters, and the former LOIS LANE artist also inked the interior of the book, which Ditko penciled. The book's front cover was printed in a 3-D version on the back cover. Ditko in 3-D!

The 1997 BAFFLER story seen above ran in STRANGE AVENGING TALES #1, which also contained the text page seen BELOW. On it, publisher Gary Groth openly mocks Ditko, and speaks of him as though he was the village idiot. Well, they say those who can't DO either teach or criticize. Here, Groth seems to have chosen the latter. No wonder this was the first and only issue of this comic! At least Gil Kane has a FEW kind words to say about Ditko...

#9 TEEN - 2013
Steve Ditko and Robin Snyder are still publishing! Robin, who shares a Facebook page with his wife, Brigit (pictured), recently posted this message about working with Ditko:

X"Like Duke Ellington, we don't get around much any more. Neither one of us has attended a convention or sat still for an interview in more than ten years. But. We have been active. We have been productive. We have been hard at work. Steve Ditko and I together have published more than 30 books, hundreds of articles and essays, the first-person history, The Comics! and our new publication, The Four-Page Series from 1988 to date."

"Quickly now. Which writer, artist, or editor has written more than any other on comics criticism and analysis? Milt Caniff? Al Capp? Chester Gould? Gil Kane? Robert Kanigher? Stan Lee? Alex Toth? I don't know the answer, but do know that one of the most prolific is Steve Ditko. His topics and themes include comics and characters such as Spider-Man and Mr. A, criticism, cultural commentary, trends and ideas, history, and philosophy. He writes of specific matters of interest with an eye for larger concerns and wider implications."

THE PHANTOM STRANGER - 2013
Sometimes, Mr. Ditko takes the time to make cameo appearances in comic books.

BELOW: Panels from PHANTOM STRANGER #7 (June 2013). Jack Ryder (The Creeper) has a discussion with a familiar-looking bartender who is wearing a button that says "I AM JOHN GALT."
