ELVIS READS COMICS -- BUT WHICH BOOKS?!

The pictures of Elvis Presley seen on this page were all taken during a 27-hour train ride from New York to Memphis on July 4, 1956, when the King was just 21 years old. As you can see, Elvis used some of the long ride to catch up on his comic books! And photographer Arthur Wertheimer was there to capture the action.

Dial B for BLOG 85-88 documented how Captain Marvel Jr. influenced the King's life, and you might expect him to be reading one of Junior's comic books. But that would be highly unlikely in this case, because "Capt. Marvel Jr." ceased publication in 1953.

So which comics were Elvis reading? Take a look at these two photos, and see if you can tell...

Hmmmm -- the King seems to be reading an ARCHIE publication! Which one? It's almost impossible to tell from this angle. But see that pile of magazines near Elvis' feet? If we turn that part of the photo upside-down, we can see one of the magazines bears the distinctive JUGHEAD logo! Which issue was it? If we crop and rotate, (keeping in mind that the cover is largely obscured by another magazine) it looks like...

But wait! Weren't these photographs taken in JULY 1956? How could Elvis be reading comics dated AUGUST? Don't get all shook up -- the answer is simple. In the old days (and still today), comics were dated several months in advance, to encourage newsstand dealers to keep them on the stands longer. For example, comics going on sale in July could be dated August, or even September. But wait! There's more!
