"In brightest day, in blackest night..."

Over 30 years ago, DC Comics teamed Paperback Library to publish paperbacks containing black and white reprints of Green Lantern/ Green Arrow comic books by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams, inked by Frank Giacoia and Dan Adkins. In an effort to educate new readers, the first paperback also contained a reprint of "S.O.S. Green Lantern," by John Broome, Gil Kane and Joe Giella. Pictured are the front and back covers, opening pages, and several interior pages. Adams' panels were cut apart and printed usually one per page. Note that the back cover has GL giving the famous speech that Green ARROW actually gave, and also note that the story is billed on the title page as "Comix that give a damn." Ah, youth!

"No evil shall escape my sight..."

This second (and last) volume of GL/GA reprints boasted a brand new cover by series artist Neal Adams. Adams' eerie "GL gets crucified for what the white man did to the Indians" scene is somewhat reminiscent of the cover Neal did for the final issue of GL/GA, which featured a Christ-figure being "crucified" on a jet airplane. Note Carmine Infantino's quote at the start of the book: "Our Green Lantern may be the instrument that will change what one generation considered junk, into the jewel of the next." And, as it turned out, GL actually DID help make comics acceptable to the mainstream. All thanks to Denny and Neal (and editor Julie Schwartz)!

"Let those who worship evil's might
beware my power ... Green Lantern's light!"

This recent sketch by Neal Adams has nothing to do with the GL/GA paperbacks above. I, Robby Reed, creator of this BLOG, just thought you might like to see it! There's plenty more like it, plus tons of other whacky stuff, all available for your viewing pleasure at NealAdams.com.
