MANHUNTER's PAL -- ZOOK!

XManhunter had a series of solo adventures in Detective Comics, but soon DC noticed something. Superman had Mr. Mxyzptlk, the omni-potent imp from the fifth dimension; Batman had Bat-Mite; and Aquaman had Quisp, the sea sprite. So DC decided it was time for Manhunter to acquire a kid sidekick/magical sprite of his OWN!

They invented ZOOK, a super-powered half-pint alien who was more like Manhunter's PET than his partner. Manhunter kept a strict watch on little Zook. When Manhunter went off on a mission, he sometimes left Zook all alone in their abandoned cave /headquarters.

If Zook so much as went outside, Manhunter scolded him like a runaway dog -- as you can see in the panel below, from Detective Comics #312.

But Manhunter was kind to his new friend/pet/sidekick/partner!

Mxyptlk and Bat-Mite had supernatural power that were basically unlimited, but Zook had only a few super-abilities. First of all, he could stretch his body like Plastic Man! The scene below reminds me of a dog using a special pet entrance. This is how Zook got out of the cave's "entrance slot."

Zook could also make his amazingly pliable body emit cold, or heat!

Zook's powerful antenna could also LOCATE anyone he ever met!

As time passed, Manhunter decided young Zook was ready to leave their cave and help him on missions. Naturally, Zook was thrilled to be of help!
