SECRET ORIGINS
MANHUNTER's PAL -- ZOOK!

John Jones (Jon'zz Jon'zz), the Martian Manhunter, debuted in Detective Comics #255. You see, a scientist's malfunctioning teleporter brought him from Mars to Earth. Hey, it happens! Manhunter had a series of solo adventures that ran in Detective Comics, as a back-up feature to Batman...

X

As time passed, DC realized that Manhunter needed a playful friend to cause trouble, and also to talk to! Superman had Mr. Mxyzptlk, the imp from the fifth dimension, and Batman had Bat-Mite -- so DC decided to give Manhunter a kid sidekick/magical sprite of his OWN! They invented ZOOK, an orange, super-powered half-pint alien who was more like Manhunter's PET than his partner.
X
John kept a strict watch on little Zook. When he went off on a mission, he sometimes left Zook all alone in their Man-Cave headquarters. If Zook so much as went outside the Man-Cave, he got scolded him like a naughty dog, as you can see in the panel below from Detective Comics #312.
X
But Manhunter was kind to his new friend/pet/sidekick/partner!
X
In 1963, Zook got his own title (not really)!

X

Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite had supernatural powers that were basically unlimited, but Zook had only a FEW super-abilities, a grab-bag of powers mostly stolen from various other heroes, with one exception! First of all, Zook could stretch his body like Plastic Man. The scene below reminds me of a dog using a special pet entrance. This was how Zook got in and out of the Man-Cave.
X
Zook's could also emit heat or cold, like the Human Torch and Iceman.
X
Zook's powerful antenna could locate anyone, a fairly unique power at the time.

As time passed, Manhunter decided young Zook was ready to leave the Man-Cave and aid him on missions. Naturally, Zook was thrilled to be of help!

Sometimes Zook fought Manhunter's foes
in his own title, with help from his pal Bat-Mite (not really)!

Where did adorable little Zook come from?
He debuted in Detective Comics #311...
Evil aliens! Can you guess where they came from? Gracious!
Besides evil aliens, something ELSE came through the warp...
X
Manhunter intervenes, and saves the creature!
X
R'ell, a GOOD alien, helps Manhunter defeat the evil aliens.
He tells Manhunter that "the Zooks" are mischievous little animals.

Just one more thing to take care of...
