XT.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents

Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #1
(cover by Wood, pictured right) was published by Tower Comics in November 1965. We're going to skip ownership issues, and concentrate on the team.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R., like the name of the then-popular TV series, "Man From U.N.C.L.E." is an acronym. It stands for "The Higher United Nations Defense Enforcement Reserves." The team of agents included Dynamo, No Man, Lightning, and Undersea Agent. In addition to the formidable talents of Wally wood, the short-lived series was drawn by a Who's Who of comic book greats.

Tower Comics publisher Harry Shorten allowed Wood a wide latitude of creative and business freedom. According to Wikipedia: "To launch the project, Wood huddled with scripter Len Brown on a superhero concept Brown had described to Wood a year earlier. Brown recalled, "Wally had remembered my concept and asked me to write a 12-page origin story. I submitted a Captain Thunderbolt story in which he fought a villain named Dynamo." With a few changes by Wood and a title obviously inspired by the success of the spy-fi TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the James Bond film Thunderball, the series got underway."
