DC SUPERSTARS PLAY BALL!

For many years, All-Star Comics was home to the original Justice Society of America, a group whose membership consisted entirely of super heroes. What inspired DC's editors to gather all their heroes together in a single title?
Baseball's All-Star game! As every baseball fan knows, the All-Star game marks the mid-point of the season, and features a superstar player in every position.

The first Major League All-Star Game was playedon July 6, 1933 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. It was inspired by Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, to coincide with All-Star Comicsthe celebration of Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition. All-Star teams were originally selected by managers AND fans. In 1970, the vote again returned to the fans. This year's All-Star game will be played in Yankee Stadium (official 2008 All-Star Game logo pictured right).

Duplicating the All-Star baseball game formula, All-Star Comics teamed every available superhero in a single group. The title ran for years, and was promoted regularly in DC house ads of every size and description. This week, in honor of Baseball's All-Star game on June 15, DIAL B for BLOG presents the largest collection of All-Star Comics House ads ever assembled. Roy Thomas, eat you heart out! Now... let's PLAY BALL!
