SECRET ORIGINS OF DIAL B FOR BLOG - PART TWO
The FINAL CHAPTER!

In our last issue, we saw how a single page from Action Comics #332 changed Robby Reed's entire life. Today, we're going to take a look at the second comic book story to play a decisive role in the formation of young Robby Reed -- it's a Spider-Man adventure from 1965/1966, plotted and drawn by the legendary Steve Ditko, and scripted by the one and only Stan Lee.

The first chapter in this three-issue story was titled "If This Be My Destiny," followed by "Man On A Rampage." Then came the concluding chapter, "The Final Chapter," featuring what Stan Lee rightfully calls "one of the most famous five-page sequences in the history of comicdom." If Spidey should still exist in a thousand years, they will still look back upon the events in this story and say, "This was Spider-Man's finest hour!"

AND NOW...

.
[The story so far...]

.
Spider-Man tracks the stolen serum to Doctor Octopus' underwater hideout! He bursts in, attacks Doc Ock's thugs, and begins wrecking the place, but suddenly....
.

TOO LATE! Spidey is trapped under tons of machinery! It's way too heavy to life, even for him...

.

Now what? Will another Marvel super hero appear to rescue Spider-Man? Will Thor fly in and smash the machinery off Spidey's back with one swipe of his magic hammer? Will the FF's Reed Richards show up with a gizmo to lift the wreckage? Will Spidey's buddy Ben Grimm, aka the Thing, appear and clobber the machinery off Spidey's back? Answer: None of the above.

Here was the Amazing Spider-Man -- alone, at the lowest point in his entire career thus far, his beloved Aunt May depending on him -- and he had failed. And no one was coming to help him.

So... what happened? How did he get out of it? Herein lies the genius of the story. Because Spider-Man didn't "get out of it." No one appeared to rescue him. The villain did not return, change his mind, and decide to let the hero live. The crushing weight of the machinery did not collapse of its own accord.

So what did happen? If you're read this history-making classic before, you know the answer to that question as well as you know your own name. If you've never read this story, then behold the panels below, and experience one of the greatest sequences ever conceived...

LATER, AT THE HOSPITAL...
.

THE END!
-- EPILOGUE --

I, Robby Reed, have read the great plays of Shakespeare! I, Robby Reed, have also read the Bible from cover to cover! Surely these works abound with the wisdom of the ages -- but I, Robby Reed, author of this article and creator of this blog, also read comic books. And one of the most inspirational things I have ever read was this Spidey story! Why? One very simple reason -- no one rescued Spider-Man.

Yes that's right, no one rescued Spider-Man.

But this is the whole appeal of the story, and the entire genius of the story.

Because no one had to rescue Spider-Man.

Spider-Man rescued himself.
