SECRET ORIGINS OF DIAL B FOR BLOG - PART ONE
The SECRET ORIGIN OF ROBBY REED!

Welcome, reader, to DIAL B for BLOG's final "Secret Origins" series -- the one where all the pieces of the puzzle come together... and explode. We start with the story that transformed young Robby Reed from an ordinary person into a comic book fan, including the incredible Ira Schnapp ad that caused Robby to choose advertising as his profession. It all began with an amazing three-part tale from Action Comics #232, 233 and 235 (1966), covers pictured below by Curt Swan:
.

Even today, this story reads as a bit of a shock -- but to a youngster in 1966, it came as nothing less than a revelation. This was no simple story, no mere punching contest between Supes and a big monster. It was a complex, multi-layered story that dealt with concepts far ahead of its time. In this story, a desperate Lex Luthor uses "psychological warfare" to give his arch-enemy, Superman, a nervous breakdown! Sounds impossible, or ridiculous... but it happened! And it was fascinating. Here's how it all went down...
.
.

Lex starts his campaign by rescuing Superman from a sniper, then leaving a stun-gun (with his own picture on it!) at the scene of the attempted crime -- just to confuse Supes. Eventually, Superman finds the stun-gun, and...

.

Luthor rescues Superman again, and leaves more evidence that he saved the Man of Steel's life...
.

Luthor rescues Superman a THIRD time, and now Supes is really getting crazed...
.

Next, Luthor projects a monstrous image over Superman's body, making everyone think Supes is a huge dragon-like monster...
.

Luthor's "psychological warfare" is working just as he planned. Superman is losing it...
.

Luthor always seems to be defeated by Superman, no matter what he does. This time, does Luthor have the guts to go ALL THE WAY? Or will Superman beat him, as usual? Luthor recaps his scheme...
.

And as the story nears the end, Superman actually seems to be having a real mental breakdown....

BUT IT WAS ALL A HOAX!

LUTHOR ESCAPES, AND...

-- EPILOGUE --
This unique story was like a mental chess match of sorts between Superman and Luthor. Its title, "Luthor's First Victory Over Superman," is quite fitting, because Lex did indeed defeat the Man of Steel -- if only temporarily. As Lex notes, he had Superman "demoralized for weeks!" But in the end, Superman out-thought Luthor, and beat him at his own game.

Luthor had attacked Superman because Superman inadvertently turned Luthor's great love, Ardora, against him. But after defeating Luthor, Superman took no vengeance -- instead, he let Luthor escape, and then helped him get back together with Ardora! This storyline, and the ideas presented in it, were an endless source of fascination for young Robby Reed, the creator of this site and author of this article. But there's more...

The first chapter of this amazing story ended with the page picture below, as scanned from Robby's very own, original copy of Action Comics #332. The psychological maneuvering depicted in this story got young Robby Reed interested in the subject of psychology, and this single beautiful, powerful advertisement -- hand-lettered by Ira Schnapp -- got Robby interested in the psychology of advertising. As you can see, the page features a magnificent Ira Schnapp DC Comics house ad for an upcoming issue of Batman...
.
And there you have it! The single page that changed young Robby Reed from an ordinary person into a life-long comic book fan and a professional graphic designer who works in the advertising industry -- where he learned the skills that make DIAL B for BLOG the world's most original comic web log! And so, to close chapter one of this series, let's thank the men responsible for creating this page: writer Leo Dorfman, artist Al Plastino, and last but not least -- the inimitable Ira Schnapp!
