THE VISIONARY - PART 6 of 10
The LOGOMAKER!
Written by Special Guest Blogger Mike Tiefenbacher

Oddly enough, my memory of who created each of the longtime DC cover logos is sketchy. Many had several versions, and it gets even worse when you realize that most DC books also had interior, splash-page logos on every story which were different from the cover logos!

It seems to me that in his letter columns, DC editor Julie Schwartz may, at some point, have mentioned who designed the original STRANGE ADVENTURES and MYSTERY IN SPACE logos, a style inspired by the interior logo done for the SENSATION COMICS strip ASTRA, GIRL OF THE FUTURE (thanks to John Wells for pointing that out). The same designer .must also have done logos for HOUSE OF MYSTERY, MY GREATEST ADVENTURE, HOUSE OF SECRETS, THE FLASH, THE ATOM.

This same person redesigned the BATMAN logo in 1965 (or at least redrew this version, which flopped the direction of the "A"s used in the original, which had "BAT" and "MAN" as two separate words; the first version of the new logo which replaced the face-on Batman with the 3/4-view version pulling his cape over his face -- drawn by Infantino and Anderson -- had the character's name together as one word) and also the DETECTIVE COMICS logo at some point. The designer is IRA SCHNAPP.

But unfortunately, I was not able to find any of Julie's notes on logo creators, despite recently having spent some time looking. Therefore, it's down to me guessing, based on my knowledge of Ira Schnapp's style.

The logos that appear to me to be 100% Schapp's work, from his own roughs and layouts, include:

STAR SPANGLED COMICS, WORLD'S BEST COMICS, WORLD'S FINEST COMICS, SENSATION COMICS, COMIC CAVALCADE, LEADING COMICS, PICTURE STORIES FROM AMERICAN HISTORY, REAL FACT COMICS, FUNNY FOLKS, ANIMAL ANTICS, WESTERN COMICS, GANG BUSTERS, MR. DOBERMAN, THE VIKING PRINCE, the 1959 ALL-STAR WESTERN starring JOHNNY THUNDER, PAT BOONE, HEART THROBS (1959), SUGAR AND SPIKE (1959), THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS, ADVENTURES OF BOB HOPE (1959), GREEN LANTERN, HAWKMAN, CAVE CARSON ADVENTURES INSIDE EARTH, RIP HUNTER...TIME MASTER, SEA DEVILS, SECRET ORIGINS, AQUAMAN, METAL MEN, TOMMY TOMORROW (1962), STRANGE SPORTS STORIES, BLACKHAWK (1964), OUR FIGHTING FORCES (1964), THE DOOM PATROL, 80 PAGE GIANT, YOUNG ROMANCE (1964), I--SPY!, CAPT. STORM, SECRET HEARTS (1964), BATMAN (1965), METAMORPHO, DOCTOR FATE AND HOURMAN, HOUSE OF SECRETS featuring ECLIPSO & PRINCE RA-MAN (1965), STARMAN AND BLACK CANARY, ADVENTURES OF BOB HOPE (1965), TOMAHAWK (1965), THE SPECTRE, 3 GIRLS -- THEIR LIVES THEIR LOVES, TEEN TITANS, SWING WITH SCOOTER, THE INFERIOR FIVE, PLASTIC MAN (1966), OUR FIGHTING FORCES presents CAPT. HUNTER (1966), B'WANA BEAST, BOMBA THE JUNGLE BOY, TOMAHAWK (1967), OUR FIGHTING FORCES with LT. HUNTER'S HELLCATS, THE FOX AND THE CROW with STANLEY AND HIS MONSTER, THE MANIAKS, and TOP GUN.

Additional logos Schnapp worked on include:

ACTION COMICS, REAL SCREEN COMICS, LEAVE IT TO BINKY (each possibly a Schnapp clean-up of a Sheldon Mayer design),
SUPERMAN (1940, from Joe Shuster's early designs), GREEN LANTERN (1948), ALL-AMERICAN WESTERN (probably Schnapp), BIG TOWN (possibly Schnapp -- it shares the same "G" that's in the '48 GREEN LANTERN logo), THE FLASH (probably Schnapp), NEW ADVENTURES OF CHARLIE CHAN (probably Schnapp), JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (probably Schnapp), THE ATOM (probably Schnapp), the 1964 DETECTIVE COMICS (either Joe Letterese or Schnapp), the 1966 JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (probably Schnapp, though possibly Letterese).

Some logos definitely NOT done by Schnapp, since they originated at other companies:

HOPALONG CASSIDY, the original BLACKHAWK, G.I. COMBAT, HEART THROBS, YOUNG LOVE and YOUNG ROMANCE. Additionally, Schnapp did NOT do: MORE FUN COMICS, the original DETECTIVE, the original ADVENTURE, ALL-AMERICAN COMICS, MOVIE COMICS, ALL-AMERICAN (1940), GREEN LANTERN (1941), BOY COMMANDOS, ALL STAR COMICS, ALL-FLASH, MUTT & JEFF, PICTURE STORIES FROM THE BIBLE, ED WHELAN'S JOKE BOOK FEATURING FAT AND SLAT, FUNNY STUFF, BUZZY, A DATE WITH JUDY, and SCRIBBLY. (The last eight all seem to be Sheldon Mayer's work, but they could have been refined by Schnapp. Again, keep in mind that these are all just guesses on my part.)

By the way, the 1966 HOUSE OF MYSTERY "DIAL H For HERO" logo was probably designed by Stan Starkman, from his identical interior logo. So, DIAL B for BLOG, the Website most responsible for popularizing Ira Schnapp's name and work, uses a parody of a logo that wasn't designed by Schnapp! Ironic, isn't it?

LOGOS vs. STONE CARVING!
.
The three logos above -- especially METAL MEN -- come closest to duplicating the lettering style used in Schnapp's designs for stone carving! As mentioned in part one of this ten-part DIAL B for BLOG series, after Ira Schnapp came to America he designed the lettering for the post office in Manhattan (see below), and other buildings. Schnapp didn't do the actual engraving, only the designing.

The VISIONARY -- SEPT 2006 by FRED HEMBECK
.
.

Finally, I thought DIAL B readers might get a kick out of seeing THE VISIONARY logo for this ten-part series on IRA .SCHNAPP, whose name means "Visionary" in Hebrew. The logo was created by FRED HEMBECK in imitation of the inimitable Ira Schnapp! Pictured left: the logo as seen on the fake cover Robby created for this series. Pictured right: Fred Hembeck's special note to Robby Reed, drawn at the bottom of the original art for the logo -- which now hangs in Robby's bedroom. Fred, your special print of my fake cover is on the way!
