.This issue, we look at the SPECTRE series which originally ran in Adventure Comics in the mid-1970s, and was reprinted in the TPB seen right.

Series writer Michael Fleisher:
“[Editor] Joe Orlando needed a lead feature for Adventure. I remember saying ‘Let me do the Spectre.’ I remember Joe commenting that he liked the Spectre a lot, that the Phantom Stranger was like a weak sister to the Spectre. So it was agreed that the Spectre would be the lead feature for Adventure. What I tried to do was to revive the feel of the early Spectre. I tried to recapture the raw, primitive feeling, that horror feeling, and I tried to make it scary and fantastic.”

Editor Joe Orlando:
“I thought Jim Aparo was a terrific artist. We had just won an award for ‘The Demon Within’ with writer John Albano… so Jim and I had worked together. We worked fine, and I love his artwork and I like his personality.”

Artist Jim Aparo:
“I was not taken aback. At the time I just took it for what it was and I drew it. But I think it was mild compared to some of the EC stuff they printed in the 1950s. They really got into the gore and guts of things. I played it down some because of the Comics Code. I used to do silhouettes or partially hide things because I knew they wouldn’t pass (otherwise).”

Now, here's a look at some of the Spectre's "greatest hits" from this memorable series...
