GIGANTOR was created in the summer of 1963, after Fred Ladd (pictured left) saw some drawings showing a giant robot controlled by a young boy. The artwork had been done by artist .Mitsuteru Yokoyama, in Japan, where the adventures of the robot -- named (in Japanese), "Tetsujin 28," or (in English) "IronMan 28" -- had appeared in a boys' magazine and an animated TV .Series called "Tetsujin 28-Go."

Ladd, at the time working on Japanese TV's "AstroBoy," was taken by the concept of a boy controlling a gigantic robot. With his partner, Al Singer, Ladd set out to Americanize the character.

He re-named the robot Gigantor, and renamed the 12-year old boy who controlled him Jimmy Sparks. Jimmy's guardian became Dr. Bob Brilliant, and his bumbling detective friend became Inspector Ignatz J. Blooper.

All together, Ladd produced 52 half-hour Gigantor episodes. Today's DIAL B for BLOG looks at episode 18, featuring Gigantor's evil twin! That's right -- it happens to ROBOTS too. Titled "Will The REAL Gigantor Please Stand Up?" it's presented for your viewing pleasure in Robby's miracle process... ANI-MOTION! Here we go!
