SHOWCASE #1
GREEN LANTERN #1
GREEN LANTERN #36
The Silver Age Green Lantern debuted in Showcase #22, September 1959, in a cover story titled "Menace of the Runaway Missile" written by John Broome, and drawn by Gil Kane and Joe Giella (cover shown above left). In this, his original incarnation, the character was pure science fiction. Possessing a magic ring that made anything he could think of materialize, Green Lantern inhabited a fantasy world of giant puppets, runaway robots, and intergalactic adventure. Then, in 1970, all that changed...
.

On February 24,1970, Green Lantern's world -- and the entire comic world along with it -- was dramatically transformed. As the ad above truthfully says, You've got to see it to believe it! They called it "Relevance." Today, the phrase "nothing will ever be the same again" is overused to the point of exhaustion, but in 1970, when GL suddenly went from fighting giant puppets and runaway robots to dealing with racism, heroin pushers, and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, well -- nothing would ever be the same again. But this time for real.

GREEN LANTERN #79 GREEN LANTERN #81 GREEN LANTERN #86
The "relevant" Green Lantern and Green Arrow were groundbreaking, precedent shattering, and totally brilliant -- but they were not long lived. Starting with GL/GA #76 and ending abruptly with GL/GA #89, the series lasted only twelve issues (#88 was all reprints). If the first eleven stories in this beloved series were groundbreaking, and they certainly were, then the final was an earthquake. Titled "...And Through Him Save A World," the comic was a thinly veiled retelling of the story of Jesus Christ. Today, Good Friday, DIAL B for BLOG proudly presents THE PASSION OF THE SUPERHEROES PART TWO...
