THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER
.
The idea of selling your soul to the devil in return for some favor first gained wide popularity in The Devil and Daniel Webster, a 1937 short story by Stephen Vincent Benet. In the story, a down-on-his-luck farmer named Jabez Stone sells his soul to the devil in return for a promise of seven years of prosperity.

Seven years pass, but when the devil comes to collect, gifted orator Daniel Webster appears to talk him out of it! However, the devil predicts that despite his victory, Webster would one day give a hugely unpopular speech, would never become President, and that his two sons would both be killed in war. These "predictions," written after the fact, were based on real events in Webster's life, so naturally they all came true. Click the book cover pictured right to read the entire story. Now, back to our eerie Brave and Bold tale!
