What is a "Comic Book Easter Egg"? Well, like a basket of eggs on Easter Sunday, and like the hidden DVD scenes this feature takes its name from, it's something HIDDEN or EXTRA or SPECIAL in the cover or panels of a comic. Below are some prime examples of Comic Book Easter Eggs!

NEXUS #50 - Panel by Steve Rude

This NEXUS panel features (left to right): Magnus and A-1, Mr. Spock and Capt. Kirk from Star Trek, Steve Rude and Mike Baron (creators of Nexus), and Jace, Jan and Blip from Space Ghost!

.

FANTASTIC FOUR #276 - PANEL by JOHN BYRNE

In this FANTASTIC FOUR panel, Reed and Sue move to the suburbs and throw a block party with some famous guests attending. Standing by door are Hi and Lois, and Sue Richards (in a brunette wig). Sitting on the couch are Joe Palooka, an unknown redheaded woman who may be Joe's girlfriend (she was blonde, this may be miscolored), and a hatless Dick Tracy. In the middle are The Lockhorns, Blondie, Uncle Walt (Gasoline Alley), Jiggs (Bringing Up Father), Henry Mitchell (Dennis the Menace's father), and in front are Dagwood and Herb Woodley, Dagwood's neighbor.

BEWARE THE CREEPER #2 - Page by Steve Ditko

This CREEPER page begins with a billboard full of sound effects...
then the effects are used, in order, in the story panels under the billboard!

.

STRANGE ADVENTURES #215 - Panel by Neal Adams

This DEADMAN panel shows some freaky rays that read "HEY! A JIM STERANKO EFFECT!"
Jim Steranko, of course, is a highly regarded comic artist and designer.

.

SUPERBOY #217 - Panel by Mike Grell

This LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES panel also has some freaky rays,
and these rays read "HOLY COW! DIG THE FIREWORKS!"

.

WATCHMEN #3 - Cover by Dave Gibbons

On this WATCHMEN cover, a strategically placed plume of smoke
turns a "FALLOUT SHELTER" sign into "ALL HEL."

.

CREEPY #75 - Page by Rich Buckler and Wally Wood

On this CREEPY page, various details combine to form a huge skull!

.

STRANGE ADVENTURES #215 - Page by Neal Adams

On this DEADMAN page, various details combine to form Deadman's head!

.

SPIDER-MAN THE MOVIE - CGI IMAGES

On the Spider-Man movie two-disc set: Put in the first disc (not the Extras disc), click on 'Commentaries.' A picture of Harry Osborn (James Franco) appears on the left. Click Harry, and you get the "CGI Bloopers & Gag Reel." This Easter Egg shows (1) A CGI clip of Peter Parker running over the rooftops chasing Pac-Man pills. (2) Spidey climbing a wall, but it's only his hands climbing the wall (3) Green Goblin and Spider-Man doing aerobics! Part of the scene is pictured below:

.

NOTE: Another Easter Egg on the Spider-Man DVD: On the Extras dick, got to Web of Spider-Man The Comic, then to Artist's Gallery, then to Peter Park er's Darkroom, then to Comic Book Artist Gallery, then click on the drawing by Terry Dodson. Highlight the camera and press up. You'll see Terry Dodson's signature. Press that, and you'll be taken to another gallery that contains famous spider-man comic book covers re-drawn using the Spider-Man movie costumes and faces.

KINGDOM COME - Page by ALEX ROSS

In this KINGDOM COME panel (page 84 of the collected edition), look over the left shoulder of the girl in the red dress walking towards you. You'll see the back of the Ray's black jacket -- the jacket has three horizontal bars on its back. The Ray's pants are down, and his naked butt is showing. DIAL B for BLOG reader King Dong, who pointed this scene out, claims the Ray is "making sweet super love." What do YOU think?

.

LOIS LANE #42 - Panel by KURT SCHAFFENBERGER

In this LOIS LANE panel, Lois' would-be suitors include Captain Marvel!
Years before DC had rights to the character, former Cap artist Schaffenberger drew
the Big Red Cheese into this panel, and posed sexy Lois in her evening gown so
she's blocking Cap's distinctive thunderbolt chest symbol. Guess who -- don't sue!
(Thanks to DIAL B for BLOG reader Craig Boldman for submitting this one.)

.

SUPERMAN #224 - Cover by CURT SWAN and JACK ABEL

On this SUPERMAN cover, Curt Swan hides his signature in children's blocks (see diagram)!

.

FLASH #165 - Cover by MURPHY ANDERSON
.

On this FLASH cover, the artist hides his signature in the block capital letters seen in the pages of the "Bible" being used to marry Iris and Barry (actually, that's Professor Zoom, aka the Reverse Flash, disguised as Barry). Thanks to DIAL B for BLOG reader MDG for pointing this one out!

Reading left to right, and top to bottom, the block cap letters in the Bible spell out "ANDERSON," the surname of cover artist Murphy Anderson! (See blow-up of cover pictured below.)

.

HAWKMAN #9 - Panel by Murphy Anderson

Hidden in this panel is the partial signature of artist Murphy Anderson ("URPHY" on the pencil),
plus a box of rubber bands that reads "PRODUCT ELONGATED MAN." Yuck!

.

GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW #84 - Panels by Neal Adams and Berni Wrightson

In this GREEN LANTERN panel, the noise effect sounds similar to the last name of
artist Mike Kaluta, but Kaluta didn't draw this panel -- a playful Neal Adams did!

.

AQUAMAN #50 - Panel by Jim Aparo

This AQUAMAN scene has to be the KING of all the "names in panels" scenes ever drawn!
How many names in this sea of comic professionals do YOU know, reader?

.
