.PART TWO OF THREE
CANCELLED COMIC CAVALCADE #1!

The following editorial appeared in "Cancelled Comic Cavalcade" #1, a photocopy collection of then-unpublished DC inventory material featuring mostly books cancelled in the "DC Implosion" of 1978:

AN EDITORIAL, OF SORTS

Comics historians will note DC COMICS went through a great deal of changes during the month of June, 1978, the immediate result of which was a considerable number of cancelled titles. We had a whole mess of material ready to go to the engravers (or ready for last minute corrections); it was felt it would be a shame if this material would never see print.

What you are now holding is the first issue of CANCELLED COMIC CAVALCADE, a two-shot which both preserves the material in question and guarantees DC's copyright to same. We have printed 35 copies, 34 of which will go to the creators and copyright people, set #35 will go to Bob Overstreet to show the world it actually happened.

Much of the material in these two issues will be printed -- probably in some altered form -- in various DC books in the future. Black Lightning will be going into Detective Comics, Doorway to Nightmare into The Unexpected, Deadman into Adventure, and so on. As for a table of contents, you'll note each story is separated by a piece of colored paper. The order of contents for this volume is as follows:

Black Lightning #12, cover to #13
Claw The Unconquered #13 and #14
The Deserter #1
Doorway to Nightmare #6
(later printed in Unexpected)
Firestorm #6 (later printed as back-up stories in The Flash)
The Green Team #2 and #3

Next issue will feature Kamandi, Omac, Deadman, The Creeper, Shade, and others. You won't have too long to wait -- we're distributing the two issues together. I would like to thank all those folks who helped put together CANCELLED COMIC CAVALCADE: Al Milgrom, cover artist on this issue; Alex Saviuk, cover artist on issue two; Todd Klein, who did the logo and cover paste-ups; Paul Kupperberg, who took the pages down to Warner Duplicating and collated the stories when it came back; Neil of the Magic Finger, who xeroxed it; Paul Levitz and Cary Burkett, who helped find the missing pages, and to Sol Harrison, who gave the OK.

BLACK LIGHTNING!
.
.Jefferson Pierce grew up in a Metropolis slum, but went on to become an Olympic medalist. After returning to Metropolis, he decided to fight ghetto crime as a costumed superhero. What else? Pierce's friend, Peter Gambi, made a costume with a belt that would let the wearer generate electricity from his body. Donning the costume, Pierce became Black Lightning.

He was created by Tony Isabella, who got the character's name from an evil bolt of "black lightning" menacing WW on the cover of Wonder Woman #225 (pictured right). Isabella happened to see the cover while developing the character.

Penciler Trevor von Eeden and inker Frank Springer provided the art for Black Lightning #1 (April 1977). Isabella and von Eeden stayed on the title throughout its 11-issue run, which ended in 1978.

Shown below, from "Cancelled Comic Cavalcade" #1, is what would have been the cover of Black Lightning #12, by Rich Buckler and Vince Colletta, and splash page penciled by Trevor von Eden.

.
CLAW THE UNCONQUERED!
.
One of DC's new "Fantasy-Adventure" line of comics, Claw The Unconquered #1 premiered in May 1975. The issue was written and created by David Michelinie and Ernie Chan. Need I point out that Claw was a shameless Conan knockoff? Shown below is the unpublished splash page from what would have been Claw The Unconquered #13, drawn by penciler Romeo Tanghal and inker Bob Smith.
.
THE DESERTER!
The Deserter was originally supposed to appear in DC's then-recently revived "Showcase" book, until it was promoted to its own title -- but before the comic could come out, it was cancelled. The story was a western series created and written by Gerry Conway, with pencils by Dick Ayers and inks by Romeo Tanghal. Below is the still-unpublished cover of The Deserter #1 by Joe Kubert.
.
DOORWAY TO NIGHTMARE!
.
Another of DC's mystery anthology titles, Doorway To Nightmare, lasted five whole issues before it was cancelled. Below is a fabulous, still-unpublished cover to what would have been Doorway To Nightmare #6 by Mike Kaluta. (Stories in this issue were later printed in Tales of the Unexpected.)
.
FIRESTORM THE NUCLEAR MAN!
.
Firestorm, created by Gerry Conway and Al Milgrom, debuted in Firestorm the Nuclear Man #1 (March 1978). Though the character would make several comebacks, his original run lasted only five issues. Below is the splash page for what would have been Firestorm the Nuclear Man #6, by Conway, Milgrom and inker Bob Mcleod. (This story was later printed as a back-up in The Flash.)
.
THE GREEN TEAM!
.
The final two stories in "Cancelled Comic Cavalcade" #1 star The Green Team, a zany group of boy millionaires. The stories, titled “The High Price of Food” and “The Deadly Paper Hanger” were written in 1977 by Captain America co-creator Joe Simon, with pencils by Jerry Grandenetti and inks by Craig Flessel.

These two stories were never published, probably deservedly so, although The Green Team itself did manage to achieve publication in First Issue Special #2, pictured right.

Shown below is a page from each of the Green Team stories. The first page introduces three members of the team: J.P. Houston, Cecil Sunbeam, and the Commodore. The second page shows the team in action!

That's it for our look at the first issue of Cancelled Comic Cavalcade #1, reader. Coming tomorrow -- we look at CCC #2, and reveal great unpublished art by Jim Aparo, Steve Ditko, Dick Giordano, Jerry Grandetti, Mike Kaluta, Joe Kubert, Al Milgrom, and Alex Saviuk! Don't miss it!
