.In February 1936, two full years before the advent of Superman, the father of Mandrake the Magician, Lee Falk (pictured right in a drawing by main Phantom artist, Sy Barry), created another mystical adventure comic-strip superhero character known as "The Phantom."

THE PHANTOM'S ORIGIN: In 1525, pirates capture and destroy a ship off the coast of Africa. That ship belongs to Christopher Standish. Pirates kill Standish, and when his son Kit later finds the skull of his father's murderer, he swears an oath upon it that he and his descendants will devote their lives to "the destruction of piracy, .greed, cruelty and injustice." Kit Standish aka "Walker" becomes The Phantom!

The original Phantom's descendants took up his mantle, and so, for almost 500 years, a "Phantom" has walked the earth. Many believe that the Phantom is an immortal spirit, a belief which gave rise to the Phantom's famous sobriquet, "The Ghost Who Walks
!"

From February 1936 to February 2006, the Phantom -- with his wife Diana and family, his horse, Hero, and his dog, Devil -- has been making good on his vow to destroy injustice for 70 years! Let's go to the images...
