.CHRIST OF TWO WORLDS
by Robby Reed

IN THE BEGINNING, Superman was NOT created as a Christ figure. In the years before the Man of Steel’s creation, the standard science fiction hero had been an earthman who rocketed to an alien planet, a la Flash Gordon or later hero Adam Strange. Then, in Action Comics #1, June 1938 (cover pictured right), two Jewish teenagers named and Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster added a novel twist to the old formula.

"Jerry reversed the usual formula of the superhero who goes to another planet,” Shuster recalls. “He put the superhero in ordinary, familiar surroundings, instead of the other way around, as was done in most science fiction. That was the first time I can recall that it had ever been done." So, originally, the .Superman story was not intended to be a Christ metaphor, but instead simply a reversal of a familiar theme.

Superman’s secret identity, of course, is Clark Kent. The names Clark and Kent, some say, have double meanings that reinforce the Christ connection. “Clark” is an Old English term for a Clergyman, and “Kent” may be derived from the Biblical Kenites (Genesis 15:19). This is an interesting interpretation, but in reality, the name Clark Kent was created by simply combining the names of two popular film stars.

According to Shuster, "We were great movie fans, and were inspired a lot by the actors and actresses we saw. As for Clark Kent, Jerry combined the names of Clark Gable and Kent Taylor." So, .in the eyes of his teenage Jewish creators, the name Clark Kent had no relation to clergymen or Kenites -- or Jesus -- at all. The same held true for the entire Superman mythos.

But decades passed, and the creation outlived his creators. And as it did, the Superman mythos grew and changed, and the similarities between the Man of Steel and the Son of God became ever greater.

Christ was raised by Joseph and Mary; Superman was raised by Jonathan and Martha. Christ lived in a time when Hebrews sometimes referred to God as “El,” Superman’s birth name is Kal-El son of Jor-El. Christ and Superman were both sent from above to offer salvation for humanity. Both had “evil twins,” the Anti-Christ and Bizarro. .Finally, and most tellingly, Christ and Superman both died, and were subsequently resurrected.

WHERE did these events take place? In “Flash of Two Worlds” (Fl ash #123, September 1961), a prize-winning story that made comic book history, the Fastest Man Alive discovered the existence of other Earths -- worlds similar to our own, but located in another dimensional plane. Then, in “The Flash - Fact of Fiction?” (Flash #179, May 1968, panel pictured left), Flash .discovered that comic book stories are actually TRUE in yet another plane of existence. Comic book writers are just “tuning in” to real events that actually occurred on another earth, in another dimension.

If this is so, it means that on this parallel earth, there really IS a real Superman... and this real Superman bears an uncanny resemblance to the real Christ of OUR world. Now -- using my very own private Cosmic Treadmill -- I, Robby Reed, creator of this blog and author of this article, have breached the barrier between worlds to uncover the secret true history of Jesus and Superman.

Merry Christmas, brave and bold ones! Here’s your Christmas present: A prize-winning story that will make comic book history all over again! DIAL B for BLOG presents...
