It's a great story -- but what makes "The Startling Saga of the Silver Surfer" a great Christmas story? Christmas, of course, is a holiday which celebrates the birth of Christ, and the Silver Surfer is a Christ-figure -- so I, Robby Reed, the creator of this blog, consider the origin of the Silver Surfer, a.k.a. Norrin Radd of Zenn-La, to be a Christmas story!
FUN FACT: In one of the greatest ironies in comic book history, the Silver Surfer character -- the second-greatest Christ-figure in all comicdom -- was created by two Jews: Stanley Lieber and Jacob Kurtzberg, a.k.a. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby!
Below are seven panels from the story which show the similarities between Norrin Radd of Zenn-La and Jesus of Nazareth. (Galactus plays the part of the vengeful Old Testament God.) From Fantastic Four #50, May 1966 (cover pictured left), here we go! Merry Christmas, reader! |
| With Judgment Day approaching, the Silver Surfer realizes only HE can save humanity! |
| The Surfer's task seems hopeless, and some lose faith in the Sentinel of the Spaceways! |
| But the Surfer MUST bring about humanity's salvation, even at the cost of his own life! |
| For humanity to survive, the Sentinel of the Spaceways must suffer and become humbled! |
| The Surfer's sacrifice saves Earth... and leaves humanity with a fearful choice! |
| Finally, as the Silver Surfer ascends to the heavens, he vows to make a "Second Coming." |
