Detective Comics #368, October 1967

In ancient times, there existed seven man-made structures which were so wonderful to behold that, collectively, they became known as "The Seven Wonders of the World." In today's issue of DIAL B for BLOG, we'll examine these seven ancient structures, and show how they once inspired a master criminal to commit... "The Seven Wonder Crimes of Gotham City!" Here we go, reader...

WONDER CRIME NUMBER ONE!
Figure hanging in Gotham Garden / Hanging Gardens of Babylon
.
Just as Robin suspects, this is the first of seven wonder crimes. The giant inflatable figure hanging in Gotham Gardens recalls the fabled hanging gardens of Babylon (artist's interpretation pictured below). This palace and its legendary gardens was built on the banks of the Euphrates river by King Nebuchadnezzar II.
.
WONDER CRIME NUMBER TWO!
Lighthouse at a fair / Lighthouse at Pharos
.
Second wonder crime! Batman and Robin attempt to stop a robbery at a fair, and suddenly the whole place gets lit up like a gigantic lighthouse! This crime recalls the famed Lighthouse of Alexandria, built by the Ptolemies on the island of Pharos near the coast of their capital city.
.
WONDER CRIME NUMBER THREE!
Colossal Batman of Gotham / Colossus of Rhodes
.
Cover shot! A colossal Batman -- just like the ancient Colossus of Rhodes. This huge statue of Helios, the sun-god, was erected by the Greeks near the harbor of a Mediterranean Island. Typically depicted as straddling the entrance to the harbor (pictured below, left), archeological evidence proves that the actual statue was still colossal, but not big enough to straddle the harbor entrance (as pictured below, right).
.

Batman and Robin solve the mystery!
.

WONDER CRIME NUMBER FOUR!
Temple of Artemis - Temple of Diana
.
As B&R have so cleverly deduced, the "Temple of Artemis" reflects the ancient wonder known as The Temple of Diana (Artemis) at Ephesus. This beautiful temple in Asia Minor was built to honor Diana, Greek goddess of hunting and nature.
.
The Dynamic Duo race to the scene of the crime, and waste no time socking the bad guys...
.
At last, the Caped Crusader corners the evil mastermind behind the seven wonder crimes of Gotham!
.

FUTURE WONDER CRIME NUMBERS FIVE - SIX - SEVEN!
The Mausoleum / The Pyramid at Giza / The Temple of Zeus
If "the mastermind thief" ever does escape from prison, here are the remaining three ancient wonders he'll base his crimes on: (1) The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, entombing King Maussollos of Caria; (2) The Great Pyramid of Giza, final resting place of Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu; and (3) The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, carved by the great sculptor Pheidias. Those are the wonders of the world, reader. There are only seven, right? Wrong! Coming tomorrow on Dial B for Blog, it's... the EIGHTH wonder of the world!
