Possessing the powers Superman AND the entire Legion of Super-Heroes, the Composite Superman is the ultimate Superman-Batman villain! He actually defeated the World's Finest team not once but TWICE! Not easy to do. How did the Composite Superman begin? Well reader, Joe Meach, janitor, was cleaning up at the Legion of Super-Heroes Museum, when...
.
.

Composite Superman isn't such a bad guy -- all he wants is to partner with Superman and Batman! BUT...
.
Hey Supes -- if Composite Superman's mask WASN'T lead-lined, what the hell do you think you'd see?!?!? Chances are, you'd see the other half of your OWN face, but green! Stupid. Anyway, here's Composite Superman's entry in "Who's Who in the Dc Universe," by the classic super-team of penciler Curt Swan and inker Murphy Anderson!
.

Back to the story! The big fight begins as Superman and Batman send three rockets after Composite Supe rman! You might think that would destroy him...
.

Composite Superman retreats to his hidden lair, but Superman and Batman manage to locate it!
.

HAHAHA! That's right, you fools. I, the Composite Superman figure from DC Direct, DO intend to dominate the earth, and that's just the beginning! Look at me; behold my magnificence. Am I not resplendent beyond anything you have ever seen?
.

Composite Superman uses Chameleon Boy's shape-shifting power to disguise himself as the Batmobile so he can surprise Superman! A battle royale ensues, with Compie using his Legion-based powers to put the hurt on Supes big-time!
.
.

Yikes! He's going to annihilate them both! But before he does, here's a nifty little Composite Superman drawing scanned from an old issue of Amazing Heroes, colored by me, Robby Reed, the creator of this blog, and drawn by the inimitable Fred Hembeck!
.

Back to the annihilation! Using the power of Element Lad, Composite Superman turns an object to Kryptonite!
.
Composite Superman DROPS them both, and flies off. With Superman unconscious, it's up to Batman to save the day. He does, then makes a startling admission:
.
"Frankly, I'm shaking!" the Caped Crusader confesses openly. So, Batman is human after all, and we love him all the more for admitting it! This would be unthinkable coming from the mouth of today's dark and emotionless Batman. Anyway --so how does the World's Finest team defeat the Composite Superman? Answer: They don't! Luckily for them, his powers begin to fade! He races back to the LSH statuettes to recharge his abilities!
.
Meach's powers faded, and so did his memory of ever being the Composite Superman! In the sequel (which I have sort of blended together with the origin tale), Meach gave his own life to save the lives of the World's Finest team. Below, the original two Compie stories (from World's Finest #142 and #168) were reprinted in DC Blue Ribbon Digest, and an impostor Composite Superman appeared in WF #283 and 284.

BONUS!
Here's the Composite Superman storyboard sequence from the "World's Funnest" one-shot written by Evan Dorkin and illustrated by every artist in the world. "World's Funnest" is probably the single funniest superhero parody comic book ever printed! Panels below by Bruce Timm.
.

Finally, here's CS as he appeared in a recent episode of the Cartoon Network's Justice League cartoon. He's pictured here with Booster Gold, a superhero from the same time period as the group which is the source of most of Compie's powers -- the Legion of Super Heroes. Long live the Composite Superman!
