Major Matt Mason, Mattel’s Man in Space, was created by the Mattel toy company in 1967, at the height of America’s astronaut craze. Mason was a "bendy” -- a figure with a rubber-molded body covering a wire frame that could be bent to make the figure pose in different positions. Below is a comic-style advertisement for Major Matt Mason that was seen in numerous comic books in the late sixties:

What next? A photo session! Major Matt Mason, are you ready for your close-up? Here it is -- with and without the figure's removable helmet. Note the gleam of bold adventure in the good Major's steely blue eyes!

Major Matt Mason's "neat equipment" included the Space Crawler, Moon Suit, Jet Propulsion Pack, Space Sled, and Space Station. Adding to the toy’s authenticity, vehicles and suits for Mason were all based on actual NASA prototypes.

The freaky alien Callisto (pictured left) may look like a villain, but he was actually Major Matt Mason's friend from Jupiter. Callisto’s superior mental abilities were obvious, due to his semi-transparent green head.

Callisto came with a “Power Pak,” connected to a “Space Sensor” to "collect and gather in planet samples for analysis" (pcitured right). When not collecting "planet samples," this tiny air-pump/gun could also be used for leaving small, circular marks on the skin, driving hamsters out of their minds, or squirting water at unsuspecting pets.

There were at least three different variations of the basic Callisto figure, but the differences between them are fairly small. The most visible difference may be the boots, which are of different heights on the three variant Callistos.

Finally, from MMM: Mattel's Man In Space, here's some art featuring comics' only astronaut-superhero toy, Major Matt Mason! Happy flying, Major!
