Vampirella, the foxy female vampire from the planet Drakulon, was created in 1968 by James Warren, Frank Frazetta, Trina Robbins, and Tom Sutton and Archie Goodwin. Warren was talking with Robbins while he was also on the phone with Frazetta, trying to describe to the artist what Vampi's costume should look like.
Robbins listened to the discussion and made her own sketch of Vampirella, per Jim Warren's description. Warren saw it, and put her on the phone with Frazetta so she could tell the master painter how Vampi should look! (See 1999 sketch by Robbins left, from Comic Book Artist #4.)
Vampirella eventually got a love interest named Adam Van Helsing, and later found herself pitted against the mad demon god Chaos. She reached her golden era thanks to the team of ultimate Vampi-artist Jose Gonzalez, and writer Steve Englehart.
Below are a few classic covers and some interior art and sketches covering Vampi's long, lovely career. Enjoy, reader! |
