FW #114
HERBIE #1
HERBIE #8
Herbie Popnecker was created by Shane O'Shea (pen name of writer Richard E. Hughes) and artist Ogden Whitney, was published by American Comics Group (ACG) starting in 1958. The Herbie character first appeared in Forbidden Worlds #73, in "Herbie's Quiet Saturday Afternoon" (Dec. 1958). In May 1964, Herbie got his own title, cover pictured above, center.
The origin of the Herbie as the Fat Fury appeared in Herbie #8 (March, 1965), cover pictured above, right. OK reader-- enough talk! Below are a few key panels from the Plump Lump's's origin story, "Make Way for the Fat Fury!" A menacing evil giant named Mr. Horrible stalks the country! And...

Awesome as he is, the Fat Fury character wasn't the star of the "Herbie" series -- Herbie was! He didn't adopt his secret identity until 1965, when he'd been appearing in comics for seven full years. Out of the 50 or so Herbie stories published, only eight feature Fat Fury appearances. Herbie starred as the Fat Fury in even-numbered issues of "Herbie" until #22 (January, 1967).

Herbie was canceled with #23, in 1967, and later that year the American Comics Group itself went out of business. Richard Hughes became a scripter for DC (writing Hawkman and other features), and Ogden Whitney freelanced for Marvel (Two-Gun Kid), and for Tower Comics (T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents). Both Hughes and Whitney retired from comics a few years later, and have since passed away.

Above, artist John Byrne's version of the Fat Fury, from the Dark Horse one-shot whose cover is pictured below, left. A-plus Comics also tried reviving Herbie, but met with limited success (covers below). Good luck searching out those Herbie back issues, reader. It's well worth the time and effort -- the "Plump Lump" is one-of-a-kind BIG fun!
